Deion Sanders is helping to work against the medical debt gap for marginalized communities in a new initiative.
Adweek reports that as Aflac’s brand ambassador, the NFL legend is teaming up with the insurance company to “address overwhelming medical disparities in America.”
Aflac's Statement
“The health and wealth gaps that exist in America are causing many families to decide between their health care and daily living expenses,” Teresa White, Aflac U.S. president said. “Through education, support and advocacy, our new initiative can help close gaps that exist in communities across the country and drive positive and lasting change.”
Close The Gap
The national initiative, Close the Gap, aims to support, educate and advocate for people who often struggle with having to choose between the expenses of health insurance and regular bills.
Reflecting on his own experience is what led Sanders to a deeper understanding of why the collaborative effort is so critical for everyday American families.
“When I was recently sidelined for months with my own unexpected medical emergency, I was not only reminded about how fortunate I am, but also saw firsthand the impact it had on both my families—my fiancé and sons as well as my football family,” he shared in a statement. “Fortunately, I was able to focus on my recovery and not worry about the cost. However, too many Americans, especially those of color, are not afforded the same peace of mind and are one step away from a medical incident that could easily lead to financial ruin.”
CareGrants Program
To further aid the movement’s mission, Aflac is set to expand its CareGrants program and award grants in February to communities greatly impacted by medical debt, as identified through data obtained via the Aflac Care Index, according to the outlet.
In October 2021, the company gave away $1,000,000 in CareGrants to help families with their medical bills.
