It appears that Idris Elba is on to his next venture — owning a big media business.
The actor and businessman is in talks of joining Miroma Group — a global marketing firm — for its estimated £1B ($1.2 billion) bid to buy British broadcaster Channel 4, according to Deadline.
The Potential Bid
Elba would be alongside Miroma founder Marc Boyan. Since October, Boyan’s team has had its eyes on acquiring the channel once it’s available. Per the outlet, the British government wants to sell Channel 4 in order for it to stand as a competitor in the digital era.
Green Door Pictures
Before talks of the potential bid, Elba launched Green Door Pictures — his own production company — in 2013.
According to Variety, the company’s mission is “developing new and established talent to champion inclusion, representation, and diversity.” To further do just that, Elba’s Green Door Pictures joined Archery Pictures in 2021 for a multi-year joint venture.
“With Green Door Pictures, he has built a production company founded on the core values of ‘paying it backwards,’ providing support and opportunities for creative talent from diverse backgrounds, whom might otherwise fall outside of established industry norms and practices,” Archery Pictures Founder Kris Thykier said, according to Variety. “All of us at Archery look forward to working with Idris and his colleagues on developing new projects that build on his talents as well as helping underpin his company’s goals.”
Actor Turned Executive Producer
Additionally, Elba and his wife Sabrina were a part of bringing an Afro-futuristic series through his company, as well as her company Sabrina’s Pink Towel Pictures. As previously reported by AfroTech, the duo was set to executive produce “Dantai” — which is set in a city where an ever-widening gap between the haves and the have-nots is the result of a rise in biotechnology.
“We’re really excited to be announcing this deal on our first anime,” said the Elbas in a statement, according to the outlet. “We’re both fans of the genre and see a huge opportunity to create something unique for a powerhouse like Crunchyroll. The story of ‘Dantai’ is our first collaboration as producers together and is one that is close to our hearts.”
