New phones with an array of innovative features are released each year like clockwork. In the age of the rapid rise of technology, Kendrick Lamar wants to take things back to simpler times.
The Compton, CA, rapper’s creative services company, pgLang, co-founded by Dave Free, teamed up with tech company Light to debut a new cell phone, Billboard reports. Light was co-founded by Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang back in 2015.
In contrast to other smartphones, pgLang’s Light Phone II doesn’t feature a web browser or color interface. Instead, it has an electronic paper screen that doesn’t emit blue light, according to the Light website. However, similar to other phones, it requires an active and compatible SIM card to be used.

The Light Phone II also includes a language tool as well as standard tools such as a hotspot, alarm, calculator, map directions, music player, notes/voice memo, calendar, and a podcast tool. Under the slogan “Just a phone,” it’s the company’s way of serving as “a less-distracting alternative to the modern cell phone,” the outlet details.
“The Light Phone II is a premium, minimal phone,” Light’s website wrote. “It will never have social media, clickbait news, email, an internet browser, or any other anxiety-inducing infinite feed.”
It continued, “Light is not just another tech company. We build all of the tools from scratch to ensure there are absolutely no third party apps tracking you. In this time of ‘Surveillance Capitalism’ and the ‘Attention Economy’, the Light Phone represents a different option. You are the customer, not the product. This is a phone for humans.”
The limited release consists of 250 phones — with color options of black and light gray — that will be exclusively sold at pg-lang.com for $299. Additionally, they ship as unlocked 4GLTE cell phones.
The Light Phone II will be available for purchase on Nov. 2, per Pitchfork.
