Lyft is working to ensure transportation will not hinder individuals from landing jobs.
According to its website, the rideshare company has partnered with Indeed, United Way, and Goodwill for their Jobs Access Program, which provides individuals with free rideshare, bike, or scooter rides so they can reach their job, job interviews, or job training sites.
In addition, the program also offers transportation for criminal record-expungement services and job seekers to secure access to Indeed’s internet devices.
Cities that can directly benefit from these resources include:
- Atlanta, GA
- Baltimore, MD
- Chicago, IL
- Houston, TX
- New Orleans, LA
- Washington, D.C.
While Lyft’s Jobs Access Program will alleviate stresses associated with transportation, AfroTech also wants to leave with you some helpful tips for when you arrive to your next job interview.
Here are five things to consider:
Set The Tone
Most job interviews will ask this million-dollar question, “Tell me about yourself?” To hit a home run, be mindful of connecting your passion for the job role with your origin story.
Be fully aware of your why before stepping into the room.

Understand Your Weakness
Be sure to understand your shortcomings. When the interviewer asks questions about your biggest weakness, they are testing to see if you are self-aware. Lead your response with transparency while also showing what skills you have learned to combat your weakness.
Don’t use this as an opportunity to present yourself as one who never makes mistakes.

Avoid Talking Poorly About A Former Employer
Regardless of your former work history, do not use an interview as an open diary to speak poorly about a previous employer or your experiences in the workplace.
Stay positive and keep your focus on what value you bring to the table.

Believe it or not, recruiters are understanding of gaps in your resume. What will be important is to focus on what you accomplished while you were unemployed. For example, highlight courses, certifications, volunteer work, or relevant opportunities that show your value.
