These Two Founders Launched A Community-Based Platform To Help Black-Owned Brands FLOURYSH

In the same way that a platform’s “why” plays a part in its trajectory, its name also plays a key role in laying the foundation for what it aims to contribute to its members. In this case, FLOURYSH was named with pure intention by entrepreneurs Steve Canal and Enitan Bereola as the online marketplace works to help independent Black-owned brands expand toward success. Consumers are naturally drawn to the heart of what businesses stand for, and the stories behind the brands hosted on the eCommerce platform are amplified through a unique partnership with both Black business owners and storytellers. Driven by community, the overall mission of FLOURYSH is to connect people with their target audience, ultimately putting more eyes on their work. “A lot of brands exist in silos and you can literally get disbursed 20 Black brands by scouring the internet or scouring Instagram. And once you’ve learned them, you’ll realize they come with these whole communities. It’s like you’re late to the...

HBCU Grad Darrin Eakins Launched A Whiskey Brand To Champion Black Ownership In The Spirits Industry

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are the institutions responsible for breeding the next generation of Black business owners and entrepreneurs. As the leaders of many industries, Black founders have the power to change them for the better — starting with their diversity problem. As a product of Florida A&M University (FAMU), founder Darrin Eakins had a vision to create a brand (a whiskey brand to be exact) inspired by a significant part of his college experience called DuBlase. Today, that brand represents a revolutionary act for Black founders breaking into the spirits industry and actually owning their spirits. Now, Eakins hopes to position his own brand as a catalyst for change to champion more Black ownership in an industry that lacks true diversity and equity.

Co-Founder Kwame Molden Is Using His Watch Brand To Educate The Black Community About Luxury

Redefining luxury within the Black community goes beyond improving price points for the average consumer. It’s about ensuring quality, accessibility and overall catering to our interests as a community. When entrepreneur Kwame Molden co-founded his designer watch company, Springbreak (SPGBK) Watches — alongside his co-founder Maurice Davis — he envisioned a brand that would merge education with cultural tastes and ultimately redefine the watch industry for Black consumers. Prior to creating their company, Molden noticed the relationship between Black consumers, foreign designers, and their products. While we often covet after these brands, they do little to give back to the community they take so much money from. “The problem we’re trying to solve in our community is that expensive and foreign companies, watch companies, in particular, are perceived as high value, but their products are unattainable for the average person,” he tells AfroTech. “We as a community grow up looking for...
