These Founders Created A Platform To Help Creators Reward Fans Who Are Generating The Most Buzz

Creators can now reward their most loyal fans thanks to the newest social platform on the block. Founders Denis Asamoah and Jay Cheng are the masterminds behind Buzzup, a platform that provides an alternative medium for creatives to connect with their most loyal followers. The gateway is timely as many creatives rely on monetized content for revenue. However, engagement and visibility can oftentimes be disrupted due to algorithms. The reality can become challenging and discouraging for some, but the platform hopes to change this fate as it strays away from the widely used advertisement model. “There needs to be a better world for creators that traditional legacy and social media platforms won’t build for creators because they cater to advertisers,” Asamoah told AfroTech. “They don’t treat creators as partners. You can see the revenues, the billions made, and how much they proportion up to creators. Ultimately, we’re saying to creators, ‘You’re adding so much value to these social...

Meet Elise Swopes, The Artist Who's Made Over $200K Selling NFTs In Just About 10 Months

Elise Swopes does both Brooklyn and Chicago proud. As an artist, she enjoys landscape work — usually featuring big city skylines like New York City or Atlanta. Then, according to her website, she “uses water and light as a paintbrush; snow turns into speckles, street lamps become glowing orbs, and water droplets take on abstract forms as she edits on the go using an array of mobile apps.” Today, the 32-year-old New York-based mixed-medium artist has turned her love of (non-fungible tokens) NFTs into a side hustle of epic proportions — and it’s made her more than $200,000 richer. Elise Swopes told CNBC that after her first NFT sold for more than $17,000 in March 2021, she knew her life was going to change. “And it has ever since then. It’s definitely brought me a lot of opportunities,” she said. The good thing about Swopes’ NFT sales is that she doesn’t just make money from the actual NFT sale itself. Rather, each time one of her NFTs gets resold, she makes a royalty between 10 and...

22-Year-Old Founder Eno Oduok Created Her Digital Platform to Uplift Nigerians in Overlooked Careers

A common experience within African culture is the lack of acceptance from older generations for non-traditional career fields. For many, the only widely-accepted career paths lie within the STEM field — an observation that was made very clear to 22-year-old founder Eno Oduok. In Oduok’s experience, she found that for Black and people of color — Nigerians in particular — there was little to no representation for people in her culture within the creative job market. One day while searching for an online space for Nigerians in public relations — Oduok’s current occupation — she noticed there weren’t any up-to-date platforms to connect with people like herself. So in September of last year, she launched her very own platform called Naija Comm — a rapidly growing space that showcases and connects Nigerians as creatives working in overlooked career fields such as communications, arts, business, and so forth. Almost every week, the platform picks select individuals to spotlight their work...

Netflix Supports Creatives With $100M Relief Fund During Coronavirus Pandemic

Normal life has been upended for individuals and big industries alike due to the coronavirus pandemic. Not only is Netflix providing entertainment for millions as they navigate social distancing, but the streaming service is also offering financial relief. On Friday, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos announced that the company has set aside $100 million to help workers in the creative community. The mission is to support those who have been most affected by the COVID-19 crisis, including “electricians, carpenters, drivers, hair and makeup artists and more.” “Almost all television and film production has now ceased globally – leaving hundreds of thousands of crew and cast without jobs,” Sarandos wrote. “Most of the fund will go towards support for the hardest-hit workers on our own productions around the world.” The entertainment giant plans to distribute $15 million to “third parties and non-profits providing emergency relief to out-of-work crew and cast in the countries where we have a...
