Bye Trump! CNN reports that Facebook has altered its rules to give former President Donald Trump the boot from its platform until January 7, 2023. The date will mark two years since he was initially suspended following the attacks at the nation’s Capitol building. From there, Facebook says that it will assess the circumstances to see if he should even be allowed back onto the social media platform. This move seals the deal that would prevent Trump from posting from his Facebook account which had tens of millions of followers and just ahead of the 2022 midterm election. However, the announcement leaves a window of opportunity open for the possibility of the suspension being lifted ahead of the 2024 presidential election. In a post on Friday (June 4), Facebook’s vice president for global affairs, Nick Clegg, said that once the two-year period is up, the social media platform “will look to experts to assess whether the risk to public safety has receded. We will evaluate external...
The TikTok wave will come to an end Sunday thanks to the Trump administration. According to The New York Times , the Chinese-owned mobile app will be barred from U.S. app stores as early as Sunday along with another app, WeChat. Both are very popular services used by more than 100 million people in the United States. “Today’s actions prove once again that President Trump will do everything in his power to guarantee our national security and protect Americans from the threats of the Chinese Communist Party,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in a statement. This move follows an executive order put in place Aug. 6 where President Trump argued that both WeChat and TikTok collect data from American users that could be accessed by the Chinese government. His administration has threatened up to 20 years in prison for violations of the order as well as fines of up to $1 million. New York Times reports TikTok is currently in talks to be acquired by the American software maker Oracle....
Social media platforms seem to have had enough of President Trump filling their platforms with hateful content. Both Snapchat and Twitter have recently taken a stance against the president’s ill and misinformative rhetoric. According to a statement reported by NBC News , Snapchat announced it would no longer promote Trump’s content on its Discover section, citing that it will not “amplify voices who incite racial violence.” “We will not amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice by giving them free promotion on Discover,” Snap spokeswoman Rachel Racusen told The Washington Post . “Racial violence and injustice have no place in our society and we stand together with all who seek peace, love, equality, and justice in America.” Twitter has also taken a stance against Trump’s violence provoking tweets. Recently the social media giant flagged the president’s “when the looting starts the shooting starts” tweet, as it broke the company’s policies on glorified violence. As...
Over the course of his presidency, Donald Trump has had a lot to say about social media companies, and he’s accused several of censoring conservative voices. Now, it seems the president is escalating his supposed fight for free speech. On Wednesday, the Trump administration launched an online form asking people to share stories regarding tech bias. The form, called the “Tech Bias Story Sharing Tool” opens with the following message: “SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS should advance FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Yet too many Americans have seen their accounts suspended, banned, or fraudulently reported for unclear “violations” of user policies. No matter your views, if you suspect political bias caused such an action to be taken against you, share your story with President Trump.” The form request that people submit evidence alongside their stories if possible, such as links of Tweets or screenshots of emails from social media companies. There is no clear information on where the data goes. However,...
