Senegal Partners With the U.K. to Develop Rapid Coronavirus Test Kits

Headlines are sweeping with coronavirus concerns, cancellations, and precautions. While people are self-quarantining for their own safety, Senegal is taking the lead on providing rapid diagnostic tests for the virus. CNN reported that Senegal has partnered with a U.K.-based laboratory called Mologic to develop hand-held tests for coronavirus that produces results in only ten minutes. “This will be the first handheld diagnostic kit collaboratively developed in the UK and jointly manufactured in Africa,” Mologic said in a statement . They also shared in their statement that these rapid tests will be especially beneficial in low-income countries where accuracy for testing has proven to be a challenge. “Rapid detection of the virus is important to stop its spread — we are pleased that the UK government has acknowledged this, supporting Mologic and the work of our partners to prevent further outbreaks internationally,” Mologic Medical Director Joe Fitchett said. UK Committee Recommends Including More Tech Jobs On The Shortage Occupation List

It can be difficult to fill tech roles, especially when they call for a specific amount of expertise. Now, the United Kingdom’s Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has suggested adding more programming and software development jobs to the Shortage Occupation List (SOL). Today, the MAC published a review of the SOL. By following its recommendation, companies would be able to bring in workers from outside the European Union with greater ease. TechCrunch reported that the committee’s chair, Professor Alan Manning, wrote in a statement: “Today’s labour market is very different to the one we reviewed when the last SOL was published in 2013. Unemployment is lower and employers in various industries are facing difficulties in finding skilled people to fill their vacancies. That is why we have recommended expanding the SOL to cover a range of occupations in health, information and engineering fields.” Specifically, the report found that the UK is lacking veterinarians, web designers, and...

Facebook Announces Ban of Several Major Far-Right UK Organizations

Last month, Facebook finally banned white nationalism and white separatism on its platforms. Civil rights advocates had been calling for the ban for years, but Facebook didn’t implement one until after the Christchurch massacre live-streamed on its site. Now, Facebook has moved on to tackling far-right organizations in the United Kingdom. The company has permanently banned twelve individuals and groups such as the British National Party (BNP), English Defence League (EDL), and Britain First, as reported by The Verge . However, the company didn’t clearly say it was its ban on white nationalism that led to their removal. Instead, Facebook said the organizations fell under its new definition of “dangerous individuals and organizations.” “Individuals and organizations who spread hate, or attack or call for the exclusion of others on the basis of who they are, have no place on Facebook,” Facebook said, according to The Verge. “Under our dangerous individuals and organizations policy, we...

The U.K. is Cracking Down On Harmful Content On Social Media

The internet has typically been viewed as a sort of free-for-all environment, but that may be changing. Recently, the United Kingdom proposed new legislation to regulate big tech online, which if passed can have major implications for the tech industry as a whole. In what would be the world’s first “online safety laws,” the new rules would regulate things like social media, file sharing platforms, search engines, public discussion forums for content found that causes “online harm.” The UK plans to bring on an independent regulator to enforce “stringent new standards.” Any platforms that don’t regulate hate speech and violent content relating to issues like suicide, cyberbullying, and abuse will be subject to fines. In addition, social media companies specifically have to follow a “duty of care” to protect users, and “could face heavy fines if they fail to deliver.” In the UK’s press release, digital secretary Jeremy Wright said: The era of self-regulation for online companies is...
