India Arie Joins Musicians Pulling Their Catalogs From Spotify Following Joe Rogan Controversy

India Arie has always been about doing what feels right. Arie has shook the music industry since the very beginning, defying beauty standards with her hit song, “Video,” and always making it known that she will not conform to fit into what the world wants her to be. And, in 2022, nothing is changing. Rolling Stone reports that Arie is among the latest musicians set to remove music from Spotify in support of Neil Young, who first demanded action against the streaming platform’s failure to address the COVID-19 misinformation shared by Joe Rogan via his podcast. While misinformation about viruses and vaccines sparked the protest by musicians on the platform, Arie says it’s much more than that. “Neil Young opened a door that I must walk through,” Arie wrote via Instagram. “I believe in freedom of speech. However, I find Joe Rogan problematic for reasons other than his Covid interviews. For me, it’s also his language around race.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by India Arie...

Two HBCU Presidents Urge Black and Brown People to Participate in COVID-19 Vaccine Trials

Coronavirus vaccine trials are underway and the presidents of two prominent HBCUs are urging you to participate. In a letter published in The Advocate , the presidents of Dillard and Xavier University — Walter M. Kimbrough and C. Reynold Verret, respectively — explain that they are already participating in the Ochsner Health System’s current vaccine trial. During the study, they have each been injected with the experimental vaccine and are “monitoring and reporting any symptoms and side effects.” Currently, they are both well. Given the devastation of COVID-19 on the Black community, Kimbrough and Verret urge students, faculty, staff, and other HBCU institutions to volunteer in one of the many trials in order for the vaccines to be understood among a diverse group. In short, they want the medicine to work for Black people just as well as it will for others. “Today, there are many regulations in place to assure the ethical execution of medical studies, including oversight by human...

Soon You'll Have a Black Woman to Thank for the COVID-19 Vaccine

There’s no better way to end women’s history month than with news of a Black female scientist doing exceptional work. Dr. Kizzmekia S. Corbett is leading the fight to find a vaccine for COVID-19. As the current health pandemic continues to cause death and disruption, Corbett, a viral immunologist at the National Institutes of Health, and a group of other scientists have begun clinical trials . Corbett cites McLellan Labs as co-inventors. According to Because Of Them We Can , a team of researchers began working toward finding a vaccine in January when they initially learned the virus was similar to the flu. Now, the vaccine is in its first trial stage at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle. As explained in the study, the investigational vaccine, mRNA-1273, directs the body’s cells to express a protein that is hoped to trigger an immune response. It has shown promise in animals and is now being tested on its first human subjects, who will receive the...

Instagram Plans To Start Blocking Hashtags Promoting Vaccine Misinformation

Across social media, vaccine misinformation continues to be a huge issue. Earlier this week, CNN reported that despite Facebook’s pledge to fight vaccine misinformation on its platforms, Instagram still didn’t have the problem under control. The report said that anyone who searched the word “vaccines” would be greeted with posts from anti-vax accounts and hashtags. At a San Francisco Press event on Thursday , Instagram announced that it would begin blocking hashtags advertising “verifiably false” information regarding vaccinations. The new policy will also extend Instagram’s ban policy to hashtags that may seem innocent but are also spreading bad information. “If the hashtag was #vaccines1234, if it contained a high proportion of known vaccine misinformation, we would block that hashtag entirely,” said Karina Newton, Instagram’s global head of public policy, according to The Verge. In the past, Instagram has blocked hashtags promoting false information, Engadget reported . For...
