The Weeknd has been relatively quiet on the music scene, but now he’s making noise with his latest investments in OverActive Media, Canada’s leading esports organization.
OAM owns Overwatch League’s Toronto Defiant and Splyce, making it one of five esports organizations in the world to have permanent spots in both League of Legends and the Overwatch League.
“As a big esports fan, I am really excited to be involved in this project,” The Weeknd said in a statement. “I am looking forward to collaborating with OverActive Media in unique and innovative ways.”
The Weeknd joins OverActive Media weeks after the company hired two former military professionals to help train some of its esports players. Esports has rapidly expanded, and celebrities have been chucking out investments in hopes of huge returns.
Drake, Snoop Dogg and a number of other artists have started dipping into esports, an industry that brought in $43.4 billion in revenue in 2018. With no signs of slowing down, it is no surprise that the investments don’t stop at gamers or entertainers.
Professional athletes like Rick Foxx, Michael Jordan, and Steph Curry each have invested in esports leagues and businesses.
The artist is expected to announce more partnerships with the league during this year’s Overwatch League season.
