It’s no secret that 2020 has been a huge year for Hip-Hop and Black culture, and it shows clearly on YouTube’s newly-released year-end trending videos and creators lists.
According to YouTube’s official blog, three-time Grammy-winning comedian Dave Chappelle won big. He snagged the No. 1 spot for Top Trending Videos in the U.S. in 2020 with his exceptional special, 8:46 — the first in-person comedy set held since the pandemic hit which directly addressed the controversy surrounding George Floyd’s murder.
Hip-Hop soon followed Chappelle on YouTube’s lists with artists such as Drake, Future, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Lil Baby, 42 Dugg, DaBaby, Roddy Ricch, and more completely taking over the Top Music Videos list in the U.S.
Drake & Future’s “Life is Good” music video topped the list collecting over 1.3 billion views and counting, while Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s video for their hit single “WAP,” came in at No. 5 with 300 million views so far.
Rapper Roddy Ricch holds a special place on the list being featured three separate times as a featured artist in NLE Choppa’s “Walk Em’ Down,” DaBaby’s “Rockstar,” and his single “The Box,” which came in at slots 4,6, and 7, respectively.
According to TheGrio, 2020 marks the second year in a row that Hip-Hop has dominated YouTube’s Top 10 trending music videos in the United States.
In 2019, Variety reported that Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X was featured on YouTube’s music videos list twice with his 12-time platinum-selling single “Old Town Road,” in which the music video held the top spot while the short film sat at No. 5.
